This collection contains records of cases brought before Judge Lewis Morris, Jr. (tenure 1739-1762), and later Judge Richard Morris (tenure 1762-1774). Also present are "Memoranda of stipulations acknowledged." Most cases concern captured French ships brought in by privateers or the British Navy, as well as a few in regards to salvaging wrecked ships, and one case related to the unlicensed of cutting timber at "Windsor, Cumberland County."

Lewis Morris first served as a member of Governor Cornbury's Council for the province of New Jersey. Due to conflict with Cornbury, Morris was removed and, later, elected to the New Jersey Assembly. Under the administration of Robert Hunter, Morris became chief spokesman for the New York Assembly in 1710 and was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the province of New York in 1715. Richard Howe, Earl Howe, was born in London, England, on March 19, 1726, the son of Emanuel Scrope Howe (1699-1735) and Mary Sophia Charlotte von Kielmansegg (1703-1782).
